Galashiels Heritage Watch is an independent local heritage documentation project recording lost and at-risk buildings in Galashiels.
The aim is simple: to make important local buildings easier to find, easier to understand, and harder to lose without public attention. The site brings together short building histories, current risk notes, source links, photographs where available, and clear routes for people who want to improve the record.
Why Galashiels?
Galashiels has a rich built heritage shaped by textiles, education, churches, civic buildings, estates, schools, hospitals, shops, mills, and local industry. Some of that heritage survives. Some has already disappeared. Some is still standing but vulnerable.
When buildings are lost quietly, the public record becomes thinner. This site is intended to help keep that record visible.
What the Site Records
- Buildings that are vacant, deteriorating, underused, or otherwise at risk.
- Buildings that have already been demolished or substantially lost.
- Photographs, source links, dates, locations, and short historical notes.
- A clear route for reporting corrections and supplying better source references.
How Information Is Sourced
The site aims to use clear, checkable sources wherever possible. These include public archive records, Trove and Historic Environment Scotland records, archived records from the former Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland, local news reports, planning documents, Geograph and other credited image sources, historic postcards, and local knowledge.
Where an exact public source link is available, it is added to the relevant building page. Where a source is known but no stable public link can be found, the page says so rather than linking to a generic or misleading page.
Methodology and Corrections
This is an independent public-interest project, not an official register or planning authority record. The site aims to distinguish recorded facts, local concern and interpretation, and welcomes corrections or better evidence.

Complementing Existing Heritage Activity
Galashiels Heritage Watch is intended to complement, rather than duplicate, existing visitor resources and the work of local heritage and regeneration organisations.
The established Galashiels Town Trail provides a clear visitor route through the town. Heritage Watch complements it by recording other surviving buildings and structures, lost places, sites at risk, source material and changes to the wider townscape.
The website remains an independent community heritage initiative. Corrections, useful links and practical suggestions for cooperation are welcome. Explore Beyond the Town Trail.
Corrections
This is a developing heritage reference. Corrections are welcome, especially for dates, former uses, architects, owners, occupiers, demolition dates, image credits, and source links.
