Why It Matters
The street shows a later stage of suburban growth than the early mill-owner villas. Comfortable semi-detached houses offered gardens, sunlight and views while remaining close to the centre. From the road, the town’s churches, mills and civic buildings can be read together in the valley below.
The Story
A licensed photograph identifies one red-sandstone semi-detached villa as dating from 1910. Its strong gables, broad windows and elevated south-west aspect are representative of the architectural confidence of the street, though the date should not be applied automatically to every house.
High Road’s position is central to its character. The steep plot levels create raised gardens, retaining walls and long views. Historic photographs from the road record a changing roofscape of church spires and industrial buildings, making the street a useful place from which to explain the form of the town.
Later garages and alterations show how houses designed before widespread car ownership adapted to twentieth-century needs.
