Useful Organisations and Resources

Last reviewed: 26 July 2026

This page gathers organisations, registers and research tools that may help people understand, protect, investigate or make the case for Galashiels’ built heritage.

Local Archives, History and Discussion

  • Old Gala Club – the principal local archive and a key source of expertise on the history of Galashiels. Its extensive collections include photographs, films, slides, maps, plans, documents, books, objects and recorded memories. People wishing to donate or offer historical material for copying should contact the club directly through its website before arranging delivery.
  • In-depth research on Galashiels’ mills: the Old Gala Club’s detailed study, The Owners and Business Affairs of the Galashiels Mills, traces mill owners, firms and changes in business organisation across the town’s textile industry. It is an especially valuable starting point for further research.
  • The Three Brethren u3a – the local Scottish Borders u3a, with a very active programme of interest groups and talks. Its history activity, including Scottish History, offers a welcoming route for people who want to learn, discuss and explore the area’s past with others.
  • Bygone Galashiels – an active Facebook group for sharing and discussing memories, photographs and stories of the town. It is a separate community from Galashiels Heritage Watch; contributors should follow the group’s rules and respect copyright and privacy.
  • Live Borders Archives and Local History – local archive and history services for the Scottish Borders.

Local Visitor and Heritage Resources

  • Energise Galashiels Trust – a volunteer-led charitable community organisation working to improve and promote Galashiels through regeneration projects, events, town-centre activity and community engagement.
  • Official Galashiels Town Trail – the established 20-stop visitor route, with directions and practical information for exploring the town. Galashiels Heritage Watch complements but does not operate the official trail.
  • Scottish Borders Council: Galashiels Town Trail leaflet (PDF, 2.77 MB) – an illustrated Council publication with a route map and historical notes. The PDF is hosted and maintained by Scottish Borders Council.
  • Beyond the Town Trail – independent companion information from Galashiels Heritage Watch, linking to related building records and wider townscape context without reproducing the official route.
  • Old Gala House Museum and Gallery – the official visitor page for the town museum, including current opening, access and exhibition information.

Scottish Heritage and Conservation Bodies

Listings, Registers and Research Tools

  • Historic Environment Scotland Portal – the official source for listed buildings, scheduled monuments, gardens and designed landscapes, and other designations.
  • PastMap – Historic Environment Scotland’s interactive map bringing together information about Scotland’s archaeology, architecture and historic landscapes from national and local records. Use the HES Portal to confirm current designation status.
  • Former Buildings at Risk Register for Scotland – an archived reference source for buildings previously recorded as at risk. It is no longer an active project, so its entries must be checked against current local evidence.
  • Canmore – Historic Environment Scotland’s national record of the historic environment, including buildings, sites, photographs and survey material.
  • Trove – searchable access to Scottish heritage records and image collections.
  • National Library of Scotland Maps – historic town plans and Ordnance Survey mapping for comparing earlier street patterns, buildings and landscapes with Galashiels today. Check the stated reuse conditions before reproducing an image.
  • Dictionary of Scottish Architects – a searchable database of architects and building projects in Scotland from 1660 to 1980, with source references.
  • British Listed Buildings: Galashiels – a useful public-facing index. Check important details against official records where possible.

Landscape, Geology and Maps

  • Landscape Beneath Galashiels – a short Heritage Watch guide to the way geology, water and topography influenced the town’s streets, mills, building materials and outward growth.
  • BGS Geology Viewer – official British Geological Survey mapping for exploring bedrock and superficial deposits. The mapping is generalised and should not be used as a substitute for a site investigation.
  • Historic Maps of Galashiels – selected maps and links for comparing the early settlement, watercourses and later expansion.
